Position Summary

The Staff Accountant 2 is responsible for moderately complex accounting entries for investments, investment services, commission payouts, accounts payable/receivable, fixed assets accounting, governmental reporting and the closing process. 

 

Duties and responsibilities are carried out in support of Technology Credit Union's (Tech CU) requirements for accurate and timely financial accounting information and account management.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties

  • Processes a full accounts payable and/or accounts receivable cycle monthly.
    • Maintains accurate records;
    • Ensures timely verification and payment of invoices and expense vouchers;
    • Codes expenses in adherence to applicable policies;
    • Receives/posts cash receipts;
    • Reconciles outstanding account balances; and,
    • Posts of journal entries.
  • Ensures remittance of Sales & Use taxes wherever applicable.
  • Files independent contractor reports to State of California.
  • Handles fixed assets accounting work:
    • Monitors the system of controls, procedures and forms for recording of fixed assets;
    • Records fixed asset acquisitions and dispositions in the system of record;
    • Sets up new fixed assets;
    • Processes monthly amortization run;
    • Reconciles the balance in the fixed asset ledger;
    • Calculates depreciation for all fixed assets for required tax books; and,
    • Recommends to management the disposal of certain fixed assets.
  • Tracks all work-in-progress items and follows up with business unit owners to ensure timely and accurate accounting.
  • Ensures all prepaid expenses are tracked and reconciled on a monthly basis.
  • Maintains the lease and equipment schedule for all Tech CU locations.
  • Ensures all annual tax filings to vendors are accurate and submitted per IRS guidelines.
  • Completes daily balancing of mortgage and commercial loan portfolios, including researching variances and taking necessary action to clear them.
  • Creates daily and monthly investment accounting journal entries, including purchases, sales/maturities/calls, accrued investment income and securitizations.
  • Completes, on a regular schedule, reconciliations and general ledger (GL) postings including associated interest and accrual calculations, using designated vendor software.
  • Manages the security safekeeping accounts for the organization.
  • Completes investment entries, Fed FR2900 reports and Wealth Management investment month-end entries.
  • Makes required entries for borrowings by Tech CU.
  • Sets-up new vendors in accordance with requirements outlined in Tech CU policy. Enters vendor invoices into the accounting system daily.
  • Completes mortgage commission and Wealth Management income and commission calculations, journal entries and reports accurately and according to schedule.
  • Reviews and posts expense reports for payment after ensuring adherence to applicable policies.
  • Responsible for annual completion of the Business Property Statement, Form 571-L.
  • Provides back-up for daily Federal Reserve Board (FRB) reconciliation. Processes all other cash account reconciliations.
  • Completes GL reconciliation as assigned within established timeframes. Follows-up with business unit owners on outstanding items.
  • Balances third party correspondent bank statements to Tech CU's accounts.
  • Develops and maintains reports and files on funds balances and management.
  • Supports the closing processes for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end associated with normal Finance/Accounting Division requirements, that include accrual, allocation, reclassification entries and reports that go into Finance Committee packet.
  • Reviews, investigates, and reports on monthly budget variance and capital expenditure reporting.
  • Assists with the preparation of monthly financial statements and Accounting’s submission to the Board Report.
  • Assists with data and reports to complete the Call Report on a quarterly basis.
  • Maintains source documents for verification of entries.
  • Analyzes anomalies in output and recommends action.
  • Researches requests from other departments and takes necessary action.
  • Assists with audit requests and ensures submission in a timely manner.
  • Looks for opportunities to create processes that address new challenges.
  • Acts as back-up for responsibilities assigned to Staff Accountant 1 position.
  • Supports Tech CU and Accounting Department with other tasks as assigned.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time; typically 40 hours/week
  • 8:30am-5:15pm, Pacific Time, M-F, (or as directed by management)
  • Occasional overtime
  • Occasional extended early morning or late evening hours, and weekends, typically with advance notice

Qualifications

Education: B.S. Degree in Finance/Accounting or equivalent experience.

 

Experience: 3+ years’ professional accountant work experience, including financial accounting operations, preferably in a financial institution. 

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Solid knowledge of basic accounting principles, practices and methods including; Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and thorough knowledge of Financial Accounting Standards (FAS).
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft Excel skills. Good knowledge of other MS Office products.
  • Ability to quickly learn core accounting system processes.
  • Solid ability to analyze data and perform research appropriate to assigned task.
  • Works independently, within assigned responsibilities, making appropriate decisions for issues at that level.
  • Solid ability to make suggestions which have potential to improve efficiency of assigned work.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate complex accounting principles, requirements and policies in writing and orally.
  • Detail-oriented and a strong commitment to accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Effectively handles multiple projects and adjusts to changing priorities.
  • Highly effective organizational and time management skills.

Licensing/Certification: None required.

 

Travel: May be required to occasionally attend offsite training, meetings or events, typically with advance notice.  Overnight travel unlikely.

 

Typical Working Conditions: Office environment with interaction with a variety of internal and external parties. May work remotely as determined by business need and individual performance.

 

Equipment Used: Routinely uses standard office equipment, including computer, phone, copier and other devices.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Speaking and listening to interact with internal and external parties in person or via phone.
  • Reading a computer screen and performing keyboarding tasks for up to 90% of the day.
  • Sitting at desk and/or conference table for up to 85% of the day.
  • Mobility to attend meetings within office building and offsite.

Pay and Benefits

  • Position Grade: 105
  • Salary Range: minimum-$83,500, midpoint-$99,000, maximum-$114,500
  • Work Location: The salary range listed is based on working in San Jose, CA. If you work remotely, your salary will be adjusted based on your geographic location.
  • Typical Starting Pay: Most new hires start between the minimum and midpoint of the range (adjusted for work location if applicable), based on experience and qualifications.
  • Bonus Potential: Target 10% of base salary based on company and individual performance
